Deborah, The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire

Although The Mitford Society is shocked and saddened by the passing of Deborah, the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, we feel it is a day for reflection on her long and fascinating life. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those who work at Chatsworth. It is truly the end of an era.

  1. She was very kind to my parents, when they were invited to lunch at Chatsworth. My mother said she gave an inscrutable smile in reply to my mother’s enquiry about a Lucian Freud painting. Woman’s Hour have done a wonderful Jenny Murray interview with her – worth a listen on BBC iplayer.

  2. Also the work of a Counter Hon: The Times using a picture of the other Hen in Debo’s full page obituary. What a column Her Grace could have written about that.
